Cardinal: create a beginning
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn form the cardinal group. In tropical astrology they begin the four seasonal quadrants. Their symbolic theme is initiation: creating movement, a direction or a new arrangement. The useful question is what needs a first step.
Fixed: give something staying power
Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius form the fixed group. Their traditional theme is sustaining and consolidating. This can be a helpful lens for commitment and concentration, alongside the question of whether persistence is still serving its purpose.
Mutable: respond to change
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces form the mutable group. Their theme is adjustment and transition. A project benefits from all three modes: someone begins it, someone maintains it and someone notices when the plan needs to change. None is a measure of how capable a person is.
