What the term describes
Retrograde refers to a planet appearing to move backward against the background sky from Earth’s viewpoint. It does not mean the planet reverses its physical orbit. A calculated retrograde flag describes apparent motion; the meanings astrologers attach to that motion are a separate interpretive layer.
The familiar astrological theme
Mercury is traditionally associated with communication, exchange and thought. Some astrologers interpret its retrograde periods as times to revisit or review those areas. That can supply a useful reminder to proofread a message or check a plan, but it does not establish that the planet causes delays or mistakes.
Keep ordinary judgment available
Read an agreement carefully because the agreement matters. Back up important work because recovery is useful. These habits make sense throughout the year. A retrograde label alone is not a reason to cancel a necessary conversation, abandon an opportunity or assume something will go wrong.
